Accommodations at Alex Laidlaw Housing Cooperativeblue bar

Alex laidlaw Housing Cooperative includes town houses and stacked units. Stacked units (numbered 198 through 214) include one and two bedroom apartments with a balcony and one car parking space. These units are located along the West side of the Booth street (New Window see the map).

Except for two bedroom unit 188, the units number 182, 184 and 186 , also located on the west side of the Booth street, are 3 bedroom town houses. All units in block A have a balcony and a carport on their west side but do not include a backyard.

Specifications of Units at ALHC:

Alex Laidlaw Housing Cooperative is composed of 36 town houses and stacked units that are arranged in four blocks A, B, C and D.

Blocks "A" and "B" are along the west side of the Booth street. Blocks "C" and "D" are located in an area on the west side of blocks A and B. The types, sizes and specifications of all units are shown in the table below:

In 3-bedroom units shown by "3", the separating wall between two small bedrooms has been removed.

Costs:

Utilities are extra, but water is included in the unit cost.

There is a Laundromat on the property. A deposit of $10 is required for laundry room keys. Washers cost $1.25 / Load, and Dryers are $1.75 / load.

You must supply your own appliances in all the 2, 3, and 4 bedroom units.

Time Commitments:

Co-op members are expected to participate in the co-op in a variety of ways. Members are expected to attend general membership meetings (four times per year) and committee meetings (usually once every month or two), as well as helping out twice a year at the co-op clean up.

Committees include Finance, Maintenance, Membership, Legal, Arrears, and Special Projects.

Deposit:

In order to leave enough time to fill vacancies, the co-op requires three months' notice when members move out. In addition to your first month's rent, the co-op requires one and a half months' rent, which is left on deposit with the Treasurer. Sometimes the co-op will let members pay this deposit in installments over the first six months of tenancy.

This deposit will be repaid when a member leaves the unit in satisfactory condition, and if the unit can be filled in the time allotted.

Housing Charges (Rent):

Housing charges are due on the first of every month. The co-op requires a series of twelve post-dated cheques to be left with the Treasurer. There is a $10 charge for each month a cheque is not on deposit, and $15 for each cheque returned NSF.

The members at ALHC are responsible for a one time payment of residency deposit equivalent to one and a half times their housing charges and a one time membership fee of $12 per adult member. The amount of the housing charges per month vary depending on the type and size of the unit as shown below:

Maintenance:

Master keys (for individual units, laundry room, and storage bay) are held by the Maintenance Director.

If you want or need work done in your unit, please contact the Mainteance Director. Requests for non-essential work (improvements/changes to units) must be submitted in writing. A deposit to facilitate the return of units to their original conditions may be required prior to the start of improvements in your unit.
